Job description


Our leading Douglas-based Finance Sector Client is undergoing a time of significant growth and transformation as they integrate a recent corporate acquisition. To support these endeavours, they are seeking an experienced Assistant Legal and Data Protection Officer to join their team.

Role Profile

The Group Assistant Legal and Data Protection Officer will support the business by; [1] providing sound legal analysis and advice; [2] ensuring the Group is compliant with applicable data protection laws and regulations, particularly the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); and [3] working with the team responsible for supporting the legal entity boards of directors that direct and control the business.

Key contribution: Legal Adviser and Data Protection Responsibilities

  • Interpret applicable laws, regulations and codes in order to provide sound and balanced legal advice to the business
  • Oversee litigation matters, coordinate with external counsel and provide them with suitable business support and guidance
  • Review material contracts and make recommendations to ensure contractual arrangements are sound and enforceable
  • Support the business in complying with legal, ethical and regulatory requirements in various jurisdictions of operation
  • Proactively monitor key changes in relevant legislation and the regulatory environment and take action accordingly
  • Implement and monitor processes that ensure the Group complies with GDPR and applicable data protection requirements
  • Act as contact point for the Isle of Man Information Commissioner's Office and lead the Group's response to any related regulatory investigation or request for information
  • Provide suitable training to all staff to raise their awareness of data protection requirements and foster a data privacy culture within the Group
  • Maintain records and management information, oversee the preparation and filing of statutory forms in a timely manner in each jurisdiction and ensure company registers, records and files are adequately maintained

Corporate Insurance Arrangements

  • Maintain corporate insurance arrangements and ensure any reportable events are identified and reported in a timely manner to the brokers

Strategic Projects

  • Provide support for key strategic projects as required

Team and Culture

  • Take personal responsibility for agreeing clear objectives which reflect and support the delivery of the business plan
  • Take personal responsibility for the identification and implementation of a personal development plan of training needs
  • Proactively monitor and manage own performance through regular reviews / appraisals with Line Manager
  • Personally support the Group Risk Director to implement the Group-wide Risk Target Operating Model
  • Flexibility and support other members of the team as required - lives and breathes, believes in and supports team culture, displays behaviours and values
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the company's core values
  • Demonstrate a full understanding of the fair treatment of customers and be risk aware

Person Profile

Experience required for this role

  • Completed degree level qualifications
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in the financial services sector, notably in insurance and/or investments, would be advantageous
  • Understanding of the legislation/regulations within the financial services sector
  • Knowledge of applicable data protection legislation, particularly the GDPR
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Experience of working in a business going through continuous upgrading, change and growth
  • Problem Solving Analyse situations, identifies solutions and presents complex problems in a clear manner, good numerical skills
  • Influencing and interpersonal Develop sustainable relationships, articulates information well, deals with stakeholders with humility, diplomacy and respect
